Law Enforcement Officer of the Year
(Within Clatsop County, Oregon) (2012)

In recognizing the excellence and experience of our law enforcement within Clatsop County, Oregon the Marine Corps League, North Coast Detachment 1228, in 2007 created a perpetual memorial award to honor individual law enforcement people that have displayed Superior, Technical, Communication and Leadership abilities.  We gladly support organizations such as the Kiwanis, Lions, Rotary, American Legion, Elks, VFW and others who support law enforcement and choose to honor those individuals who wear the badge.

The Memorial award is named in honor of Oregon State Police Officer, Sergeant James Shepherd, who was shot and killed from ambush by a lone assailant on 22 May 1980, while on duty, in rural Clatsop County.

With prior approval of the Agency or Department involved, the perpetual Memorial plaque is placed on display at the recipient’s place of employment until such time as when the award will be called again for a different display location.

The Law Enforcement Awards presentation and social is held at 2pm on Saturday, 13 October 2012 at a location within Clatsop County, Oregon.  Awards are presented to include, Valor, Runner-up, Special Service and where shown,  Special Achievement. The recipient of the Officer of the Year, receive an invitation from the Detachment Commandant to attend the Marine Corps Birthday celebration/dinner  held in Clatsop County each year.

Any person residing in Clatsop County, may nominate an active law enforcement person employed or assigned within Clatsop County, Oregon, for these awards.

The information letter and application for nomination can be downloaded from Detachment 1228's website, mcl1228.org.. Those wishing the application be sent to them, call the law enforcement awards coordinator, Mel Jasmin, 503-861-2030 / 503-440-0086 and provide name and mailing address.
