Law Enforcement
Officer of the Year The Role of Law Enforcement is to Serve and Protect the People. In recognizing the excellence and experience of our law enforcement personnel within Clatsop County, Oregon the Marine Corps League, North Coast Detachment 1228, in 2007 created a twelve (12) year perpetual memorial award to help honor individual law enforcement people that have displayed Superior, Technical, Communication and Leadership abilities. The Memorial award is named in honor of Oregon State Police Officer, Sergeant James Shepherd, who was shot and killed from ambush by a lone assailant on 22 May 1980, while on duty, in rural Clatsop County. The large memorial plaque is placed on display at the winning recipient's Agency or Department for one year or until a new winner is chosen. The recipient receives a smaller plaque and Certificate for their own personal display/use. The Law Enforcement Awards presentation and social is held in October of each year within Clatsop County. Other awards are presented to include, Runner-up, Special Service and where shown, Valor. The recipient of the Officer of the Year, and spouse, receives an invitation from the Detachment Commandant to attend, the Marine Corps Birthday celebration/dinner on 8 November within Clatsop County, Oregon. ANY certified law enforcement officer employed or assigned within Clatsop County, including any retired law enforcement person residing in or near Clatsop County, may nominate an active, certifide law enforcement person employed or assigned within Clatsop County, Oregon, for these awards. This letter and
